What happens in Toldot

Rebecca carries struggling twins — Esau, the hunter, born first, and Jacob, grasping his brother's heel. Esau sells his birthright to Jacob for a pot of lentil stew. Years later, with Rebecca's help, Jacob disguises himself as Esau and receives the blessing of the firstborn from his blind father Isaac. Esau's cry when he discovers the deception is one of the Torah's rawest moments, and Jacob must flee his brother's fury toward an unknown future.

If this is your bar or bat mitzvah portion

Toldot is a family story with no easy heroes — deception, favoritism, and consequences that echo for generations. It invites honest questions: can a good outcome excuse a dishonest path? The Torah trusts you to sit with hard stories.
