What happens in Chayei Sara

Despite its name — 'the life of Sarah' — the parsha opens with Sarah's death. Abraham negotiates the purchase of the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron as her burial place, the first piece of the land his family will ever own. Then he sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. At a well, the servant devises a test of character: the right woman will offer water not just to him but to his camels. Rebecca does exactly that, and her kindness writes her into the story.

Big themes

  • Kindness as character
  • Honoring those we've lost
  • Transitions between generations

If this is your bar or bat mitzvah portion

Rebecca is chosen for one reason: unprompted kindness to a stranger and his animals. Chesed — lovingkindness in action — turns out to be the Torah's job interview. What would your actions say about you if someone was quietly watching?
