What happens in Vayetzei
Alone on the road, Jacob sleeps with a stone for a pillow and dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven, angels going up and down. He wakes changed: 'God was in this place, and I did not know it.' In Haran he works seven years for Rachel's hand — only to be given her sister Leah, then works seven more. Between the two sisters and their handmaids, eleven of Jacob's sons are born. After twenty years, Jacob sets out for home, wealthy in family and flocks.

If this is your bar or bat mitzvah portion
Jacob's realization — 'God was in this place, and I did not know it' — is a whole d'var Torah in one line. Holiness often hides in ordinary places until we learn to notice. Where are the 'ladders' in everyday life that we walk past?
