What happens in Korach
Korach, a Levite, leads 250 prominent men in open revolt against Moses and Aaron: 'All the community is holy — why do you raise yourselves above God's assembly?' The challenge sounds democratic but masks a grab for power. The earth opens and swallows the ringleaders; a plague follows until Aaron, incense in hand, literally stands between the dead and the living to halt it. Aaron's staff blossoms with almonds, confirming his service.
Big themes
- Arguments for the sake of heaven
- Ambition versus service
- Standing between danger and others
If this is your bar or bat mitzvah portion
Korach's slogan was technically true — the whole community is holy — which is what makes it dangerous. The rabbis contrast arguments 'for the sake of heaven,' which endure, with arguments for power, which consume. How can you tell which kind you're in?
