What happens in Chukat

Chukat opens with the red heifer, the Torah's classic law beyond explanation. Then the wilderness years collapse into a chapter of losses: Miriam dies, and the water gives out; commanded to speak to the rock, Moses strikes it twice, and God tells Moses and Aaron they will not enter the land. Aaron dies on Mount Hor, mourned thirty days by the entire house of Israel. The parsha ends with battles won and songs sung at wells.

If this is your bar or bat mitzvah portion

Moses — after everything — loses the promised land over one moment of anger at the rock. It feels unfair, and the commentators argue about it endlessly; leaders are held to their words. Some laws, like the red heifer, we honor without fully understanding. Some losses we carry the same way.
