What happens in Tzav

God commands — tzav — Aaron and his sons in the daily disciplines of the sanctuary: keeping the altar fire burning through the night and never letting it go out, removing the ashes each morning, and handling each offering with exact care. The parsha closes with the seven-day ordination of the priests, Aaron and his sons remaining at the sanctuary entrance as their service begins.

If this is your bar or bat mitzvah portion

The altar fire had to be tended every single morning — even miracles need maintenance. Enthusiasm starts things; routine sustains them. Any student partway through months of practice knows the holiness of just showing up again today.
